I used this week’s Illustration Friday theme to work on the areas I feel I am lacking in. I wanted to create a piece that looked like it could be a spot in an article about about thoughts or dreams, as I have almost no editorial-style art in my portfolio. I did it digitally, because I wanted to have a faster method than watercolor for potential magazine work, and my digital portfolio is a bit barren except for catbutts. I also tried to limit the color in it, both because I thought it worked for this theme, and because I tend to go freaking crazy with color which works better for kids’ work than editorial. ;)
I’m happy with the experiment!

Wonderful style and excellent use of color. I could see this as an editorial illustration. I think you’ve succeeded.
Ohhhh :D I like it I like it I like it! the diary is the best place to write about our dreams… and her pet is lovely :)
Like I said on FB, I really like this a lot. It’s very refreshing to see something that’s all digital from you, but it still has all the vibrancy of your watercolor pieces (I think especially with the texturing you have going on). And I can definitely see this working as a spot in a magazine or newspaper. Good work, Jade! :)
Thanks guys! I might use this as my next postcard, but first I want to get more editorial-style illos so it’s not the odd one out. I appreciate the comments!
Anna, that’s really helpful to me that you think this digital piece captures the vibrancy of the watercolor pieces. I really want a cohesive portfolio no matter the medium– thanks for the helpful feedback! Oh, Anna, have you considered getting a gravatar? It’s a good way for your art to show up everywhere on blogs! http://en.gravatar.com/
